MYOPIA MANAGEMENT

Helping to slow the progression of short-sightedness in children

WHAT IS MYOPIA?

Myopia (short-sightedness) is a common condition where distance vision becomes blurred while near vision remains clear. It develops when the eye grows slightly too long or the front of the eye is too curved, meaning light focuses in front of the retina instead of directly on it.

Myopia is increasing at a significant rate, particularly in children. Around 30% of the global population is currently affected, with estimates suggesting this could rise to 50% by 2050. In the UK, approximately one in five children is short-sighted by the age of 12. Reduced time outdoors and increased near work — including prolonged screen use — are widely recognised contributing factors.

WHY EARLY DETECTION MATTERS

Myopia isn’t just about needing stronger glasses each year. Higher levels of myopia are linked to an increased lifetime risk of eye conditions such as retinal detachment, glaucoma and myopic macular degeneration.

Managing progression during childhood — when the eyes are still developing — can significantly reduce these long-term risks.
