Waterloo Eye Centre Hit the News!

July 29, 2016

Eagle eyed readers of the Sefton Champion may have spotted us in the news not so long ago, when we were featured after teaming up with a patient to demonstrate just how important it is to receive regular eye examinations.

Rachel Garforth’s sight, and life, were saved after she booked an eye examination with us due to experiencing double vision and needing to cover her left eye while at work.

At first, it appeared that Rachel’s left eye demonstrated clear symptoms of a serious condition called papilloedema and Cortney immediately referred her to the St Paul’s Eye Hospital in Liverpool to see an eye specialist. Unfortunately, Rachel’s condition was much worse than we thought.

She told us: “The doctor was very upbeat and seemed confident that he would get to the bottom of my symptoms, however, after he carried out a number of tests, his mood quickly became much more serious. It was clear that my condition was much more dangerous than previously thought.”

Within just a few hours of her appointment, Rachel received a lumbar puncture to release pressure on her brain and received an MRI before being admitted.

She spent the next two weeks in hospital after being diagnosed with cavernous sinus thrombosis – blood clots which form within the cavernous sinus.

Rachel warned: “People need to be made aware of the importance of visiting an optician if they experience any problems with their eyes, even if they don’t think it is serious. I had been to see my GP several times before making an appointment at Waterloo Eye Centre.

“I’ve been so lucky. I had no idea it was going to be such a dangerous condition. They told me that it was life threatening. I honestly thought it would be a problem that could be fixed with glasses.

She added: “It’s not even worth thinking about what would have happened if Cortney had not acted so quickly.”

We’re so happy to see that Rachel is safe and well after her ordeal. She has since been to the practice and we’re happy to say that all of her symptoms have now gone!

We can’t stress enough how important it is to have regular eye examinations! As Rachel’s story shows, changes to your vision can indicate much more serious underlying conditions that need to be addressed right away so never take any chances!
